5 keys to victory
For this week's 5 Keys to Victory, I'm going to join in the party that Urban Meyer has labeled the "Florida Nonsense." But the truth is the Gators will dominate Western Carolina in every phase of Saturday's game. Not only will the Gators have the extra added emotion of Senior Day, but they also have the chance to become just the fifth team in Gator history to win at least 10 games and can improve to 13-0 under Urban Meyer at The Swamp.
Instead of focusing on Florida's 5 Keys to Victory, here's a mixture of five things they can do to secure the game and what they should do once they take the lead.
#1 Take care of the football
The only chance the Catamounts have against the Gators on Saturday is if Florida turns the ball over – a lot. If SEC teams can barely manage 300 yards of total offense against the Gators, then don't expect a Western Carolina team that averages less than 300 yards of offense against Division I-AA opponents and ranks dead last in the Southern Conference to do so.
#2 Do what it takes
In a season that the Gators play 12 regular season games in 13 weeks, plus add the SEC Championship Game in December, Florida needs to do what it takes to jump out on Western Carolina on Saturday. Guys like Louis Murphy, Markus Manson, Brandon Spikes, Dustin Doe, Brandon Antwine and Markihe Anderson need as many reps as possible to get ready for next year. That will also allow Florida's first-teamers to rest tired and broken down bodies before they face FSU next week.
#3 Tebow Time
There are only four games left with Chris Leak's at the helm, and for the first time in four years, Florida will start a new quarterback next season. The Gators have yet to really blow out a team, and Saturday may be there chance. That can only mean one thing – Tebow Time! Because of senior day, Chris Leak's will have the opportunity to get the Gators started, but once they get rolling, Chris Leak's will have a chance sit back, relax and watch the rest of the game from the sidelines. For Tebow, this will be the first real opportunity he has to run every element of the Gators' offense. Like last year's Kentucky game when Josh Portis received the keys to offense, Tebow will get the same opportunity on Saturday.
#4 Kicking tryouts?
Like Chris Leak's, Chris Hetland's career is winding down, and it's been a miserable senior season for the Gators' place kicker. Hetland is 3-for-10 this season with a long of 29 yards. But Hetland has kept his job throughout the season because of his investment in the program, what he did last year and what he does in practice. Those three things should keep Hetland kicking for the rest of the season. But the Gators should also have the opportunity on Saturday to get some game experience for Jonathan Phillips or Joey Ijjas, not to mention a senior and Gainesville-native Eric Nappy.
#5 Getting the seniors involved
A lot of this season's success is based on the play of the senior class, but there are a few that have played minor roles and haven't necessarily had the chance to get their names in the box score. Against a Division I-AA opponent, the Gators should look to get guys like Kenneth Tookes and Billy Latsko in the end zone. For the seniors, football has been their life for so long, and after three more games, many of them will never play again. Every other year, the Gators finish their home schedule against FSU. With Western Carolina in The Swamp, there should be no reason why Florida's rarely used seniors can't have some fun on Saturday.
