SportsSEC: Vanderbilt's Price named SEC Male Athlete of the Year
Nashville, TN - Vanderbilt pitcher David Price has been named the Southeastern Conference's 2007 Male Athlete of the Year, the team announced Wednesday.
The league's athletic directors selected Price for the Roy F. Kramer trophy. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays chose the lefty as the top pick in the Major League Baseball draft earlier this month.
Price went 11-1 with a 2.63 ERA and Division I-leading 194 strikeouts in his junior season for the Commodores.
"I am very thankful to the baseball coaching staff for helping me develop during my time at Vanderbilt and this year has definitely been a special one for me and my teammates," he said.
Price was All-American and shared the National Player of the Year honor from Collegiate Baseball with Florida State second baseman Tony Thomas.
He is only the second Commodore to win the SEC athlete of the year award. Vanderbilt basketball player Will Perdue received the honor in 1988.
Other nominees for the SEC player of the year award were: Alabama outfielder Emeel Salem, Arkansas tailback Darren McFadden, Auburn diver Steven Segerlin, Florida quarterback Chris Leak, Georgia tennis player John Isner, Kentucky quarterback Andre Woodson, LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell, Mississippi runner Barnabas Kirui, Mississippi State baseball player Edward Easley and Tennessee basketball player Chris Lofton.
